AI for hands-on and field work
Use AI on your phone or computer for checklists, reports, finding procedures and learning new skills, while safety rules always come first.
For: Technicians, trades, field engineers, drivers, warehouse, retail, hospitality and other hands-on workers.
Lesson 1
Turn procedures into checklists
Make long manuals easy to follow on the job.
- Give an AI assistant your workplace allows (for example ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot) an approved procedure or manual section.
- Ask for a step-by-step checklist in the same order, with safety steps marked.
- Check it against the original before using it.
Try this at work: Turn one procedure you follow into a short checklist with AI, then compare every step with the original manual.
How to check it: The checklist has every step of the original, in order, with every safety step.
Watch out: Never follow an AI checklist that differs from the official procedure. The manual wins.
Lesson 2
Write job reports quickly
Spend less time on paperwork after the job.
- Record short notes or voice notes during the job.
- Ask the assistant to turn them into your report format.
- Check measurements, parts and times.
Try this at work: Use AI to turn your notes from one job into a report in your company's format, then check every figure.
How to check it: The report is accurate and complete and matches your notes.
Watch out: Do not include customer personal details in unapproved tools.
Lesson 3
Find answers and learn new skills
Get explanations when you need them.
- Ask the assistant to explain a concept or a fault in simple steps.
- Ask for the source and check it against official documentation.
- Ask a qualified colleague before trying anything unfamiliar or risky.
Try this at work: Ask the assistant to explain one thing you want to understand better at work, then confirm it with the manufacturer's documentation or a qualified colleague.
How to check it: The explanation agrees with official documentation.
Watch out: For electrical, gas, structural, chemical or medical safety, follow official procedures and qualified people only.
Lesson 4
Plan your day and stock
Use AI to organise routes, jobs and orders.
- Give the assistant your job list and constraints.
- Ask for a suggested order and a list of parts or stock needed.
- Adjust for what you know about the sites and customers.
Try this at work: Ask the assistant to order tomorrow's jobs and list the parts you will need, then adjust the plan with your own knowledge.
How to check it: The plan is realistic and nothing you need is missing.
Watch out: AI does not know traffic, site access or customer preferences unless you tell it.
